Research at the Humanities Department

The Humanities Department aims to generate top-quality research addressing key questions and research avenues in the sub-fields it encompasses while fostering interdisciplinarity and maintaining a research agenda that is responsive to current societal needs and priorities.

Our Research Strategy

Our research is driven by a commitment to:

  • Fostering academic excellence and innovation,
  • Publishing in internationally recognised journals, books, and leading publication outlets,
  • Promoting interdisciplinarity across neighbouring fields, including sociology, marketing, gender studies, and the broader social sciences.

Our work traditionally aligns with the core areas of our two undergraduate programmes—English Language, Linguistics and Literature and Communication and Digital Media—covering topics such as:

  • Applied Linguistics
  • Translation Studies
  • Cultural Studies
  • TESOL
  • Visual and Interactive Media
  • Social Media

Through collaboration, research projects, and methodological innovation, we aim to broaden the reach and impact of our academic contributions.

Research Priorities

The Humanities Department aligns its research agenda with the University’s wider priorities of sustainability, digital transformation, and well-being and inclusion.
We actively support these themes by encouraging staff-led initiatives and fostering student engagement through undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations and PhD studies.

Research Topics

Our staff research explores a range of contemporary and socially relevant topics, including:

  • Cultural Representation
  • Language and Power
  • Literary Ecosystems
