The Computer Science Department (CSD) is committed to conducting impactful research that advances academic knowledge and delivers public good. Emphasising ethical inquiry and academic excellence, the department supports a dynamic research culture spanning a broad range of topics.
CSD actively participates in funded Research and Innovation Actions (RIAs), encouraging collaboration with industry, fostering interdisciplinarity, and addressing key environmental, social, cultural, and economic challenges.
Our research activities span a broad spectrum of topics, including formal knowledge representation, semantic technologies for knowledge inferencing, blockchain systems, AI-driven pattern recognition, cloud and fog service brokerage, and policy-based governance. In addition, the department actively explores the industrial and societal applications of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), reflecting a strategic emphasis on interdisciplinary and ethically grounded inquiry.
Our academic staff play a pivotal role in shaping the department’s research direction. Their work spans diverse areas of computer science, organised into three main thematic pillars:
focusing on semantic inference, formal models, modeling of multi-agent systems, and AI-based reasoning.
addressing decentralisation, trust, and scalable resource management through technologies such as blockchains and cloud/fog service brokerage.
bringing together policy frameworks and responsible innovation practices to ensure that research outputs align with societal needs and values.
Through these thematic areas, the Computer Science Department plays a pivotal role within a broader ecosystem of leading European research institutions and industrial partners, contributing to the advancement of both scientific excellence and societal progress.
