“As long as our brain is a mystery, the universe, the reflection of the structure of the brain will also be a mystery.” Santiago Ramón y Cajal

About NEUREC

The Neuroscience Research Centre (NEUREC) brings together a multidisciplinary team from Psychology, Neuroimaging, Computing & Engineering, Economics & Finance, and Marketing to address today’s most pressing societal, health, and financial challenges.

We adopt a unique holistic, interdisciplinary approach, combining neurophysiological, psychophysiological, behavioural, and computational methods to drive innovation in mental health, education, markets, and leadership. Our ultimate goal is to improve well-being and health, organisational performance and productivity, and to create innovative and resilient communities by bridging research, education, and industry.

NEUREC also plays a vital role in training the next generation of researchers and creating a thriving neuroscience community in South East Europe.

MENTBEST

Protecting mental health in times of change

Engaging with Society and Industry

We aspire to disseminate research outputs with impact to the industry and society overall.

Supporting people with neurological and mental illnesses

Applying neuroscience research using low-cost devices to develop affordable, scalable and easy-to-implement diagnostic and therapeutical methods - including biosignals to produce classification methods, neurofeedback to treat mental health problems, and socially assistive robots for children with Autism Spectrum.

Provide evidence-based knowledge and solutions to businesses, developing together innovative applications

Providing businesses with scientific-based information on consumer’s behaviour, marketing products and services.

Making an impact in the society, reaching out to policy makers

Educating stakeholders and the wider society by drawing policy-making implications, and translating and communicating the research outputs in a form that can be readily understood by health professionals, educators and policy makers.

Research Themes

Neurodevelopment

Using neuroimaging to develop biomarkers for neurodevelopmental disorders. We explore technology-enabled training and interventions (e.g. robotics, serious games) to better understand the Autism Spectrum Disorder  and improve children’s lives, and the impact of traumatic brain injury on brain maturation and development in youth.

Ageing in Health and Pathology

Understanding cognition and emotion in patients with Dementia, Parkinson, and Neurovascular disorders, aiming to achieve earlier diagnoses and novel non-invasive therapeutical approaches. We research how social and behavioural risk factors interact with brain mechanisms responsible for cognitive and daily functionality in healthy older adults. Our aim is to apply technology and non-invasive approaches to improve quality of life and promote healthy ageing.

 Affective Neuroscience

Exploring human connectivity, and graph theoretical modeling to investigate affective modulation in the healthy and pathological brain. Unraveling brain mechanisms of the so-called moral emotions (e.g, shame, guilt and self-disgust) in healthy populations and in conditions with impulse control problems (e.g, Parkinson disease, gambling).

Neuromarketing

Decoding customer’s emotions, feelings and perceptions towards products and services, so as to better explain and predict consumers’ decision making process and behaviours. By integrating information from neural (EEG) and physiological (e.g, Heart Rate variability and skin conductance) activity with behavioural (e.g, eye tracking) and psychometric measures we expect to better comprehend what is behind customer’s desires and choices.

Neurofinance

Investigating how the brain processes financial information, and makes decisions in the light of psychological, emotional, individual and stress-related biases. Our research aims at combining recent insights and methodologies from neuroscience with traditional theories of finance to better explain how leaders, organizations and investors make financial decisions. This promising emerging field aims to impact society by improving retirement plans and wealth management among others.

Nature-Inspired Computing & Sensor Networks

Studying emergent phenomena in natural systems in order to devise biologically (nature) inspired artificial solutions, and using innovative Internet of Things architectures and sensor networks, to inform neuroscience and behavioural models.
