The award was presented at an official ceremony held at Thessaloniki City Hall
The Department of Humanities was honoured with a Public Engagement Award by the Municipality of Thessaloniki for its community-focused initiative, Free English Language Lessons for Teenagers, which promotes educational inclusion and social outreach.
The award was presented at an official ceremony held at Thessaloniki City Hall, where the department was represented by Dr. Zoi Tatsioka, Head of the Department of Humanities and Dr. Vicky Papachristou, Assistant Professor.
The awarded initiative offers free English language lessons to teenagers from financially vulnerable families, addressing barriers to access in language education. At the same time, it provides valuable teaching practice for final-year BA students, who gain hands-on classroom experience under the academic supervision of Dr. Vicky Papachristou, and Ms. Maria-Araxi Sachpazian.
This Public Engagement Scheme reflects the department’s broader commitment to community involvement, experiential learning, and socially responsible education, creating meaningful benefits for both learners and students.
The University of York Europe Campus congratulates all staff members, students, and volunteers involved in the initiative and thanks the Municipality of Thessaloniki for recognising the programme’s contribution to the local community.
